Is High Street UK girding for war?
Roger Bootle's piece in the Telegraph a few months ago seemed to sum up the mood of the retailing gentry quite nicely. Yes there's a recession coming, but not everyone will necessarily be affected. It's a common theme across the retailing sector at the moment, and let's hope it holds true.
'Off the high street, in previous downturns, car sales have seen the biggest falls in spending. Cars are often bought on credit and, as we know, the supply of cheap credit has dried up. On the plus side, I expect gadgets to keep selling well, helped by the rapid price deflation we are seeing of flat-screen televisions, for example.'
